Figuring it out
Bringing emotion to work, the physical to the digital, and carving out a niche in a crowded scene.
Building a studio from scratch is a choose-your-own adventure style endeavor. Heather-Mariah Violet Dixon and Abigail Kerns partners of women led Studio HMVD dive into the winding, textural process that has built their practice since 2018. From exposing underlying fears at the start of projects, to their sense of play leading to a whole new business niche, join us for a conversation on the highs and lows of Studio HMVD.
This event will be live-captioned and include ASL interpretation.
Event Series: Work in Progress
Studio HMVD: Figuring it out is part of the Work in Progress event series. These events are focused on the creative process, personal development and professional development. They aim to give a peek behind the curtain and expose failure as a valuable experience.

Speakers
Heather-Mariah Violet Dixon
Heather-Mariah is an incessant maker of things, from typography to photography. In 2018 she opened Studio HMVD to soothe her need to make bigger, wilder and weirder work, beyond what she could create at her 9-5’s. Studio HMVD has since been featured in AIGA Eye on Design, Communication Arts, and Working Not Working Magazine. They work with a range of clients, some you’ve met, and plenty more that have yet to launch.
Abigail Kerns
Abigail is a dancer turned designer turned project manager, prop stylist, and partner at Studio HMVD. She joined the practice in 2019 after working in academia, fitness and the arts. She has since built out the strategic side of the practice and helped it grow with structure and whimsy. In 2021, Abigail and Heather launched Mock Reality, a line of premium mockups for the design industry.
