MATTHIAS ERNSTBERGER THE SURFACE YEARS
Due to a scheduling conflict this event has been cancelled.
Matthias Ernstberger, former creative director of Surface magazine, will take you through his three year journey at Surface, where he conducted the first major rebranding and redesign in the magazine’s history. A unique talk housed in an intimate setting, Matthais will dive into all aspects of the process from challenges, growing pains and evolution from a 70-page lifestyle magazine into a 140-page book featuring contemporary design, architecture, fashion and art.
After receiving his Diploma in Graphic Design and Visual Communication at the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design, Ernstberger acted as Senior Designer at the prestigious design firm Sagmeister Inc., New York, where he completed projects for the Guggenheim Museum, Columbia University, Deitch Projects, Talking Heads, Lou Reed and Jay Z, among others. As Senior Art Director at the advertising agency Lipman, New York, he executed projects for David Yurman, BCBGMAXAZRIA, Tumi, Burberry, Lord & Taylor, Mariah Carey and Jennifer Aniston. Since 2010 he has served as the Creative Director of Surface Magazine.
Ernstberger’s work has been recognized in The New York Times and in numerous design publications. He received design awards from the Art Directors Club, New York, the Type Directors Club, New York, AIGA, and the D&AD, London. The projects he contributed to while at Sagmeister Inc. have gone on to national prominence, including several works on paper in the permanent collection at MoMA, New York, and a 2004 Grammy for the packaging design of the box-set Once in a Lifetime by the Talking Heads.
