Every typeface has a life beyond the type designer’s desk and every great piece of editorial design starts with the right letterforms. This virtual event pulls back the curtain on one such collaboration: the development of Exposure, a typeface by Federico Parra Barrios and its use by designer Eric Hu in the pages of ATMOS Vol. 7.

Often invisible collaborations between designers across disciplines, this conversation brings Federico and Eric together to talk process, decision-making, and the back-and-forth that happens when a typeface meets a real editorial project. Expect a candid look at how a typeface takes shape, how a designer chooses and deploys type in the wild, and how each side of that exchange shapes the other’s work.

Speakers

Federico Parra Barrios

Federico is an independent type designer based in Berlin, Germany. He studied type design at the Cooper Union in New York and the Atelier National de Recherche Typographique (ANRT) in Nancy, France. His work reflects curiosity about perception and materiality in typography. He has found inspiration in sculpture, photography, image reproduction, among other fields. He treats type design as both a functional tool and a medium for artistic experimentation. He is the author of the typefaces Exposure, Hour, and Lost, published by 205TF.

Eric Hu

Eric Hu Studio works across the disciplines of design, art direction, typography, and code to produce striking visual identities and experiences. For more than a decade, New York creative director Eric Hu has gained an international reputation for mixing formal audacity with conceptual clarity. Previously, Eric Hu was VP of Design at Cohere, Global Design Director at Nike and the Director of Design at SSENSE. He currently is a Principal Designer on the Brand Systems team at Shopify.
