Redefining the look and feel of modern philanthropy

If Brooklyn were its own city, it would be the third largest in the United States. And yet, when Brooklyn Community Foundation launched in 2009, Brooklyn nonprofits received just 2% of all NYC foundation funding. Since then, Brooklyn Community Foundation has moved over $100 million to Brooklyn nonprofits.

But Brooklyn deserved more. After nearly 15 years, the foundation understood that to truly make a difference in the status quo, they would need to make a dramatic shift. It was time the brand felt as big as its ambition—that it became an institution as iconic and inclusive as Brooklyn itself. So Mother New York and Mother Design developed a strategy to distance the organization from notions of traditional philanthropy, seen largely today as elitist, dysfunctional, and detached. Brooklyn Community Foundation should be reborn not only in look and feel, they posited, but in name: Brooklyn Org would be the champion for Brooklyn, the new model for community philanthropy, and the destination for all who care.

Join Kozue Yamada, Brian Reid, JP Napleton, and Gonzalo Donoso for a behind-the-scenes look at the reimagining of Brooklyn.org.

Speakers

Kozue Yamada

Hailing from Japan, Kozue shifted her freelance life to join the Mother Design family full time in 2020. Before joining Mother Design, she worked at several studios and start up companies in New York including WSDIA, RoandCo studio, the Wing, and Away. Before freelancing she honed her brand design skills as a staff designer at Interbrand NY, where she worked for over three years.

Kozue loves combining traditional graphic design with playful experiments. She is also passionate about illustration, art, fashion, and all forms of visual expression.

When she’s not at work she loves cooking Japanese food and hangs out with her dog, Potato Chip.

Brian Reid

Brian joined Mother in March 2020 as a strategist working across clients in Mother New York, Mother LA and Mother Design. Prior to joining Mother Brian worked for Carmichael Lynch working on brands like Subaru, US Bank and IBM. Prior to that he was client side working for brands like American Express and General Mills.

Recently Brian has shifted his focus to the inner workings of Mother as Director of Organization Strategy and Culture, creating and executing strategies to ensure Mother’s clients, people and organization are as effective and efficient as possible.

When not working Brian is equally happy traveling with his wife or hanging out at home with their two cats and dog. He’s currently playing Dragon’s Dogma II and Dave the Diver

JP Napleton

As a native Texan (and a firm believer in the yeehaw agenda), JP got his first taste of advertising thanks to the Multicultural Advertising Internship Program (MAIP) and soon began his full-time career in account management at Blue State Digital, supporting nonprofit organizations bring awareness to their efforts and raise funds for good.

After spending time in the purely digital space, he found a new home at Mother. Over the past 5 years, JP has been a Mother on brands like Target, Amica, and Seventh Generation. In his position, his priority is the people, both client and team, making sure everyone feels supported, heard, and has the tools they need to succeed.

Outside of work, he stays committed to his interests, both within the industry and out, by mentoring fellows a part of MAIP, serving on nonprofit Brooklyn Org’s Spark Prize Committee, and continuing his passion for music as a member of New York City Gay Men’s Chorus. You can usually find JP supporting Brooklyn-based drag queens, enjoying a sunny beach day at Jacob Riis, and saying “Yoohoo!” to anyone he meets.

Gonzalo Donoso

Gonzalo is a Brooklyn-based graphic designer who brings a unique multicultural perspective, having split his formative years between Miami, FL, and Guayaquil, Ecuador.

For the past four years, he’s been designing at Mother, working with notable clients such as Target, Dave & Buster’s, Cadillac and Brooklyn Org.

Gonzalo specializes in developing visual systems that deliver impactful and cohesive brand experiences.
