The AIGA NY Board of Directors is a volunteer leadership team made up of dedicated professionals committed to supporting and advancing New York’s design community. Each board position comes with specific responsibilities—from programming and mentorship to fundraising and community outreach—with all roles focused on collaboration, innovation, and service. Board members are expected to actively contribute their time, expertise, and creativity to shape the chapter’s initiatives, build meaningful connections, and support AIGA NY’s mission Championing the Future of Design for All.

VP of Operations

The AIGA NY VP of Operations is responsible for board-wide process, policies, and reporting to ensure our board is running in optimal and effective ways. You will be supported in these efforts by the executive board, the Executive Director, and the AIGA NY board.

This role is great for someone in the project management space.

What will you do?

  • Identify and execute opportunities to improve chapter efficiency, organization, and documentation
  • Prepare and disseminate internal communications with the Executive and broader Board (i.e., agendas, action steps, etc) – if not directly, establish a process
  • Partner with the Executive Director and act as liaison between the Executive Board and workgroups, ensuring workgroups are focused and have the support they need to meet objectives.
  • Work with Exec Board and Executive Director to establish and plan board wide meetings, including monthly board meetings, quarterly IRL meet-ups, board orientation, and hello/goodbye mixer
  • Work with Exec Board on all day orientation agenda and activities planning
  • Work with Exec Board and each workgroup at the beginning of the session to establish goals and metrics for success.
  • Follow through at the end of the session to report progress and ensure archival material and documentation
  • Recording and documenting Chapter business (election results, minutes, bylaws, etc.) – if not directly, establish a process for this

Executive Board Members have a suggested individual contribution or fundraising goal of $2,000 outside of programming revenue

VP of Grants & Sponsorship

The AIGA NY VP of Grants & Sponsorships is responsible for diversifying and augmenting existing revenue streams to ensure the organization is a sustainable, modern non-profit. You will be supported in these efforts by the executive board, the Executive Director, VP of Operations, and the Executive Board.

What will you do?

  • Develop a cohesive strategy for ensuring AIGA NY has a sustainable revenue model by:
  • Managing all grants and sponsorships
  • Identifying, contacting, and soliciting potential cash and in-kind donors for AIGA NY, our events and programs.
  • Researching and filing for relevant grants for the org and its initiatives.
  • Organize and lead sponsorship development for emerging opportunities
  • Maintain the shared list of existing and potential in-kind and cash sponsors across all AIGA NY programs and initiatives.
  • Update sponsorship templates, with clear asks and requirements per sponsorship tier.
  • Operationalize and templatize existing AIGA NY deliverables against sponsorship obligations.
  • Work with the Executive Workgroup to create a long range plan for membership growth and retention.
  • Coordinate a committee of volunteers to assist with membership, member-led events, staffing tables advertising membership at AIGA NY events, etc.
  • Report and document learnings; recommend and create templates to scale work from year to year.

VP Community Experience

The AIGA NY VP of Community Experience is responsible for membership advocacy, development and reporting to ensure our community is actively connected to our board, our events, resources, activities and each other. You will be supported in these efforts by the executive board, executive director, VP of Operations, and the AIGA NY board.

This role is great for someone in the customer service space.

What will you do?

  • Grow our membership, developing strategies to gain new members and ensure we retain existing members who are up for renewal.
  • Develop and improve the complete annual member benefits package. 
  • Develop new member welcome packages; renewal retention packages.
  • Work with the programming chair to develop programs that encourage membership, potentially including annual party (budget permitting)
  • Work with Mentorship and Education Workgroup Leads to amplify member benefits.
  • Inject membership-centric thinking and advocacy into other board programs and activities
  • Work with the executive workgroup and executive director to create a long range plan for membership growth and retention.
  • Develop strategies to gain new members and ensure we retain existing members up for renewal.
  • Develop a sustainable feedback mechanism or tool for our members and community at large
  • Monitor and report monthly change to our membership base
  • Report progress of all membership-related projects to the board of directors
  • Identify, plan and implement best practices, approaches and programs to better serve our membership and community. All implementation of new programs or events that encourage membership, including annual parties, will be coordinated with the VP of Programming and workgroup. 
  • Coordinate with the VP of Grants and Sponsorship on outreach (including decks), share any language/data that could be used in grants, and discuss all changes to membership so development and membership are aligned in public-facing communications and messaging.
  • Coordinate a committee of member volunteers to assist with membership, member-led events, staffing tables advertising membership at AIGA NY events, etc.
  • Report and document learnings; create templates to scale work from year to year.

Education Workgroup

The AIGA NY Education Workgroup is responsible for developing and improving our close relationship with schools in the NY and TriState area that offer graphic design courses or majors. You will focus on the needs of educators, students, and their potential employers, developing programming specifically for AIGA NY student members and interested non-member students. You will be supported in these efforts by the exec board, the executive director, and associated AIGA NY board members in  your workgroup. 

What will you do?

  • Develop and execute Student and Education strategy and associated programming and initiatives
  • Maintain legacy programming of Job Fair, Portfolio Review, and Fresh Grad
  • Maintain the resources section on AIGA NY Design Directory
  • Identify and manage student liaisons to work with AIGA NY on relevant initiatives
  • Identify and manage any potential partners to support the workgroup
  • Report and document learnings; maintain and/or create templates to scale work from year to year.
Mentorship Workgroup

The AIGA NY Mentorship Workgroup is responsible for supporting and improving our two current mentorship cohort initiatives. You will focus on the needs of mentors and mentees, maintaining the current format of the programs and providing. You will be supported in these efforts by the exec board, executive director, and associated workgroup board members. 

What will you do?

  • Coordinate and update the two annual cohorts, including
    • Communications regarding the upcoming cohort
    • Outreach to potential mentors
  • Reviewing and matching applicants
  • Coordinate programming and mixers
  • Identify and manage any potential partners to support the programs
  • Report and document learnings; create templates to scale work from year to year.
Programming Workgroup

The AIGA NY Programming Workgroup is responsible for coordinating the events and programs of the chapter. You will ensure that programming elevates the chapter and provides new and interesting opportunities to connect with members and the design community. You will be supported in these efforts by the exec board, the executive director, and associated AIGA NY board members in  your workgroup. 

What will you do? 

  • Develop a cohesive programming calendar to amplify each of AIGA NY’s workgroups
  • Work with the board and members to ensure a variety of programming
  • Manage the annual fundraiser
  • Develop templatized event to-do list
  • Develop compelling and relevant content
  • Recommend and reach out to speakers
  • Write event copy
  • Design invitations
  • Create event timelines and templates
  • Identify and manage any potential partners or sponsors to support our events
  • Report and document learnings; create templates to scale work from year to year.
What must all AIGA NY Board members do?
  • Be a member of AIGA
  • Follow the AIGA NY bylaws
  • Understand AIGA NY’s goals, mission statement, initiatives, and be an active contributor in realizing them
  • Understand the budget, process, financial health of the chapter, and assuring we maintain good credit and financial standing
  • Attend at least 70% of the board meetings
  • Contribute to board meeting agendas, and actively participate at meetings
  • Attend weekly workgroup meetings
  • Attend the annual chapter all-day onboarding meeting
  • Encouraged to attend chapter-led events to support fellow board members
  • Be familiar with chapter programming and chapter policy and economic issues
  • Be available to members and non-members in the design community
  • Avoid conflicts of interest
  • Question policies and practices that you don’t understand or cause concern.
