About AIGA NY

AIGA New York (AIGA NY) is the local chapter of American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), the professional association for design, founded in 1914. The New York chapter, founded in 1982, is a non-profit focused on championing a future where the design profession is more accessible and equitable to all people. Our volunteer-run board delivers this mission through three key community-facing workgroups – education, mentorship, and programming. They are joined by our operational executive workgroup. AIGA NY celebrates the world class design made in its home city, providing a platform for the diverse people who make it, and advocates for a more fair, accessible industry.

History

AIGA, The Professional Association for Design was founded in 1914, when a small group of typographers, printers, and artists came together in New York City to formalize a shared commitment to elevating design as a professional practice. Early founders—including Fred Goudy, Alfred Stieglitz, and W. A. Dwiggins—believed in design’s power to communicate with clarity, dignity, and craft, laying the groundwork for what would become the nation’s leading design association.

As AIGA expanded nationally in the late 20th century, the organization began decentralizing leadership to better serve regional creative communities. In 1982, AIGA New York was established as part of this effort, creating a locally governed chapter dedicated to supporting designers in one of the world’s most influential creative capitals.

Since its founding, AIGA NY has grown into the largest chapter in the AIGA network, serving a vibrant community of designers across disciplines, industries, and career stages. Operating as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit with its own Board of Directors and governance structure, the chapter continues to advance AIGA’s core values while responding to the evolving needs of New York’s design ecosystem.

Through decades of programming, advocacy, and community-building, AIGA NY has remained committed to strengthening the profession, expanding access to opportunity, and ensuring that design in New York reflects the diversity, creativity, and ambition of the city itself.

Sponsors

AIGA NY acknowledges the generous support of our sponsors and encourage you to turn to them first.
