Green-Wood Cemetery Lettering Walk
When was the last time you visited a cemetery, and what did you do there?
We invite you to join this AIGA NY field trip to explore the carved letters at Green-Wood Cemetery, where headstones and mausoleums serve as open-air archives of lettering history.
Founded in 1838, the Brooklyn cemetery is the final resting place for generations of New Yorkers. It features a wide range of carved inscriptions and ornaments that illustrate how letterforms and design conventions changed over time. On this guided walk led by designer and researcher Raven Mo, we will focus on 18th and 19th century gravestones and the craft behind their letterforms.
For a quick glimpse of what to expect, you can watch this mini-documentary about Green-Wood’s carved letters.
This walk is open to anyone curious about how design shapes the way we remember.
Please wear weather appropriate clothing, comfortable shoes, and bring a water bottle.
