Rally in East New York, May 12, 2015

Attending community meetings, most of which scheduled around the Department of City Planning’s current affordable housing plan developed with other city agencies involved in the Sustainable East NY plan was critical to our understanding of the neighborhood, of the pressing issues at play and the key leaders in the community. While we were just starting to build a relation with our main partner (LDCENY) we realized we needed to be considerate of the current forces in the context of the city plan, i.e. Cypress Hills LDC and the newly formed Coalition for the Advancement of ENY were two of the stakeholders in the area which we absolutely had to include in our effort.

Whether attending the major rally at Highland Park, workshops held at the Co-Faith church to review the Coalition’s draft counter proposal, presenting ourselves at the Community Board 5 monthly meeting, hopping on a trolley tour to visit open retail spaces around Atlantic, or meeting one-on-one small business owners recommended by our expanded network of stakeholders, we were getting our feet wet, getting familiar with the reality of East New York and New Yorkers and slowly becoming accepted by the community.
