A participatory design initiative to help three New York City neighborhoods—Red Hook, the Rockaways and Lower Manhattan—imagine a more vibrant future for themselves as they overcome the lingering effects of Superstorm Sandy.

“Dear Rockaway,” is a creative placemaking project developed in collaboration with community organizations in Rockaway to foster the spirit of goodwill and connectivity that emerged across the peninsula in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. The collection of 100+ recorded interviews with residents, from various parts of the peninsula and different walks of life, provided content for the “Dear Rockaway,” project, which includes temporary stencils, poster campaigns, and inserts in the weekly paper. The project aims to highlight connections between neighbors and reacquaint them with places of local significance and to amplify existing recovery efforts while broadening the discussion of Rockaway’s future.
