THURSDAY 26 FEBRUARY 2009 6:30–8:00PM
SMALL TALK NO. 6: MAIRA KALMAN
Not Thinking
(and the Pursuit of Happiness)
Painter, essayist, observer, dreamer, embroiderer, accordionist, silent walker, author, fan of petit fours, teacher, student of the oboe and clarinet, illustrator, fez collector, opera maker, receipt-saver, list-maker and inventor of the percussion instrument “the Canundrum,” Maira Kalman is having an open house to her imagination, and you're all invited.
The adventures of Max Stravinsky, the poet-dog, have been carefully chronicled by Maira Kalman in a series of children’s books which she wrote and illustrated. Her second-to-latest book is an illustrated version of The Elements of Style by William Strunk Jr. and E. B. White. Her opera of the same title will be performed at Lincoln Center in February 2009. You probably remember her New Yorker cover “New Yorkistan,” a collaboration with Rick Meyerowitz, and maybe you've seen one of her shows at Julie Saul Gallery. Hopefully you got to see her collected visual essays online for The New York Times, “The Principles of Uncertainty,” but if you missed it, you can now treasure it in its book form. You can also see her new column for NYTimes.com, “And the Pursuit of Happiness.” At this intimate talk, pictures will be shown, stories told, snacks served.
SMALL TALKS SERIES
Extra large ideas find an intimate home in a formal setting.
