MONDAY 29 OCTOBER 2007 6:30–8:30PM
T/Style: JANET FROELICH AND STEFANO TONCHI
Fashion and design have become driving forces in contemporary culture. Designers influence not only the way we look and the shape of things around us, but also the way we live and think. What used to be distinct realms – architecture, fashion, design, art, cinema, music and food – have become blurred: fashion designers open restaurants and hotels, musicians design fashion collections, artists make Hollywood movies and architects theorize on retail strategies. T Magazine is a reflection of these cross currents. It is a magazine that curates the new culture of style. T’s creative director Janet Froelich and its editor Stefano Tonchi, will explain this brave, chic world in the new TimesCenter designed by Renzo Piano.
Janet Froelich is Creative Director of The New York Times Magazine and T: The New York Times Style Magazine. Under her direction, The New York Times Magazines have won more than 60 gold and silver awards from The Art Directors Club and The Society of Publication Designers, among others. Janet oversaw the repositioning and redesign of the Part II publications of The New York Times Magazine, creating the new publishing venture, T: The New York Times Style Magazine. She is a recipient of The Art Directors Club Hall of Fame award and has served on the faculty of The School of Visual Arts. She received a BFA from Cooper Union and an MFA from Yale University. She lives in Manhattan with her husband and has two grown children.
Stefano Tonchi became style editor for The New York Times Magazine in November 2003 and is now the editor of T: The New York Times Style Magazine, which is published 15 times a year and covers fashion, design, and travel. Previously, Stefano held creative and fashion director positions at Esquire, Self Magazine and L'Uomo Vogue. He worked as a creative consultant for J. Crew and co-founded the original Emporio Armani magazine. Since the late 1980's he has also curated a number of exhibitions devoted to style, and edited several books on the intersection of art and fashion. Stefano graduated with a classic studies degree from Liceo Classico Forteguerri in Pistoia, Italy, and studied political science at the University of Florence, Italy, from 1979 to 1984.
