Classic/Contemporary:
A conversation with Jim Sherraden
Join AIGA/NY and frog design for a series of intimate conversations about the line between Classic and Contemporary design. Listen to well-known designers discuss their influences and share how they keep the work fresh.
Jim Sherraden is chief designer, archivist, and manager of the historic Hatch Show Print in Nashville, TN. Working within one of America’s oldest letterpress print shops, Sherraden has witnessed the evolution of printing as designers seek to incorporate new technologies while maintaining the desirable qualities of the classics. Hatch Show Print’s unique design sensibility and process have brought the letterpress into the digital age. Its historic set of fonts and formats introduce their own design constraints and allow unusual creativity.
Sherraden began working with Hatch in 1984 and today, with his creative staff, designs and prints over 600 jobs annually. The credo of the shop is: “preservation through production.”
Sherraden is the co-author of Hatch Show Print: The History of a Great American Poster Shop.
